Surfside Playhouse is seeking a diverse cast of six women for its upcoming production of Steel Magnolias, one of the most beloved and enduring plays in the American theatre.

AUDITION DATES

• Sunday, August 2
6:00 PM – 10:00 PM
• Monday, August 3
6:00 PM – 8:00 PM

Auditions will be scheduled in one-hour appointment blocks.

AUDITION INFORMATION

Actors who would like to audition are asked to request an appointment by emailing director Chris Ikner at cikner.surfside@gmail.com. Please include your full name in your email.

Upon receipt of your email you will be given an audition form and sides which will be read at the initial auditions. Please complete the audition form attached. As far as the audition sides, these do not have to be memorized but are given as an opportunity for you to prepare as much as possible. Callbacks will consist of cold readings from the script.

REHEARSAL DATES

Rehearsals for the play will be held on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays from 7:00 PM – 10:00 PM and on Sundays from 2:00 PM – 5:00 PM.

Tech/Dress will be held on Sunday, September 6 from 2:00 PM – 8:00 PM, followed by Monday, September 7 to Thursday, September 10 from 6:00 PM – 10:00 PM.

PRODUCTION DATES

This production will run weekends from Friday, September 11 – Sunday, September 27.

ABOUT THE PLAY

Set in Truvy’s Beauty Salon in the small Louisiana Parish of Chinquapin, Steel Magnolias follows six remarkable women as they navigate friendship, family, loss, love, and life’s unexpected challenges with humor, resilience, and grace.

CHARACTER BREAKDOWN

TRUVY JONES
Female | 40s–60s | Any Ethnicity
The owner of the beauty salon. Warm, witty, and endlessly welcoming. Truvy serves as the heart of the community and often offers wisdom alongside a fresh hairstyle.

ANNELLE DUPUY-DESOTO
Female | 18–35 | Any Ethnicity
The salon’s eager but inexperienced assistant. Shy and uncertain at first, Annelle undergoes one of the play’s most significant transformations.

CLAIREE BELCHER
Female | 50s–70s | Any Ethnicity
A wealthy widow with a sharp tongue and impeccable comic timing. Quick-witted, elegant, and delightfully irreverent.

OUISER BOUDREAUX
Female | 50s–70s | Any Ethnicity
The town eccentric. Grumpy, opinionated, and hilariously blunt. Beneath her tough exterior is a deeply caring friend.

M’LYNN EATENTON
Female | 40s–60s | Any Ethnicity
Shelby’s mother. Strong, loving, practical, and fiercely protective. The emotional anchor of the play.

SHELBY EATENTON-LATCHERIE
Female | 20s–30s | Any Ethnicity
M’Lynn’s daughter. Charming, spirited, independent, and determined to live life on her own terms despite serious health challenges.
