Audition Information

Our season schedule contains the audition and performance dates for our six mainstage shows. We will post more details at least two weeks in advance of each audition.

Unless otherwise specified, auditions are as follows:

  • Auditions are on a Sunday and Monday at 7:00pm.  The doors will open at 6:30.
  • Auditioners only need to attend one audition.
  • Wear comfortable clothing and shoes. 
  • No prior experience or resume is required.
  • A prepared piece is not required. 
  • Every auditioner will be notified by phone of their result, before the full cast list is announced publicly.
  • Surfside does not precast roles….ever.

Character Descriptions

Ahab – Gender Flexible- Playing 40 – 60

The egomaniacal captain of the Pequod. Ahab lost his leg to Moby Dick. He is single-minded in his pursuit of the whale, using a mixture of charisma, terror and bribery to persuade his crew to follow him.

(Starbuck Crew) Ishmael– Gender Flexible – Playing Teen to 30

The narrator, and a junior member of the crew of the Pequod.

 (Starbuck Crew) Starbuck – Gender Flexible – Adult

The first mate of the Pequod. Starbuck questions Ahab’s judgment but is easily swayed if he is flattered.

(Starbuck Crew) Queequeg – Male –  Adult

Starbuck’s skilled harpooner and Ishmael’s best friend. Queequeg is a composite of elements of African, Polynesian, Islamic, Christian, and Native American cultures.

(Stubbs Crew) Stubbs – Gender Flexible – Child

The second mate of the Pequod.

(Stubbs Crew) Tashtego – Gender Flexible – Child

Stubb’s harpooner. A voracious reader, In this case, Tashtego is reading a novelle called “The Whale” which is eerily similar to the story of Moby Dick.

(Stubbs Crew) Gerry – Gender Flexible – Child

Likes to fight…It’s a hobby.

(Flask’s Crew) Flask – Gender Flexible – Mature Adult

An “Old” hand at Whaling. Past his prime but doesn’t know it to the point of being delusional. (Physical Comedy Required)

(Flask’s Crew) Daggoo – Gender Flexible – Adult

Flask’s harpooner. Support’s Flask’s delusions. (Physical Comedy Required)

(Flask’s Crew) Pip – Gender Flexible – Child

The youngest member of the crew. Logical to a fault. Does not voluntarily support Flask’s delusional behavior.

Fedallah – Female – Age Flexible

A mystic from a strange made-up land. Fedallah predicts the future…although not particularly accurate.

Father Mapple – Male – Mature

A former whaleman and now a preacher. Father Maple gives occasional sermons aboard the Pequod meant to encourage and lift the morale of the crew. His severe pessimistic attitude makes this very hard to do.

Captain Boomer – Gender Flexible – Mature

The jovial captain of the English whaling ship the Samuel Enderby. Boomer lost his arm in an accident involving Moby Dick. Unlike Ahab, Boomer is glad to have escaped with his life, and he sees further pursuit of the whale as madness. He is a foil for Ahab, as the two men react in different ways to a similar experience.

Bonkers Gabriel – Gender Flexible – Adult

A “Mad” sailor who tries to dissuade Ishmael and Queequeg from signing up to sail with Captain Ahab.

Potts – Gender Flexible – Adult

The cook who loves to lay out plans for delicious meals but all Potts produces is something akin to gruel. He/she carries a large meat tenderizer at all times. (Sledge-o-matic?)

The Stowaway – Gender Flexible – Adult

The stowaway is chased throughout the show and changes into different disguises in an effort to avoid being caught.

The Skipper – Male – Adult

The captain of a small excursion boat lost at sea.

Mary Ann – Female – Playing 18 – 35

A passenger on Skippers boat. Must look good in shorts.

Ginger – Female – Playing  18 to 35

Another passenger on the skippers excursion boat. Must look like a sexy glamorous movie star.

Fanny Dragg – Gender Flexible – Adult

Cruise Director. In charge of entertainment and excursions. She is also in charge of “Auditioning” the sailors prior to sailing.

Ensemble – Sailors, entertainers and other characters be created as needed.
