RULES

Get out your glue guns, your sewing needles, and your wildest imaginations possible as this competition is open to both individuals and organizations with ONE entry per individual or organization allowed.

Categories listed are for prizes awarded.  All hats will be judged as one, save for the “Recycled Materials” category.  If your hat will be made from recycled materials, please check off the box that denotes this on the submission form.

The judging panel will consist of 4 well-known local arts organization’s staff members and/or volunteers.

Prior to the event, you will be asked to write a brief description of your hat for the MC, Jody Hatcher, to read aloud from stage as you model your hat.

The “EVENT” will commence at 2pm on Saturday, March 30th on the Surfside Playhouse stage.  It will commence as follows:

  • There will be an opening musical number at the start of the show.  Our MC, will then come to the stage to start the competition.
  • Hats will be worn by the maker; however, this is not mandatory.  Anyone you chose to wear and model your hat may do so.
  • Hats will be given a number in the order of submissions received.  The hat wearer will wear the number on their person/clothing, not on the hat.
  • Each hat will be given 1 minute to ‘show off’ to the judges as the MC describes and talks about your hat to the audience as well as the judges.
  • The judges will not be allowed to see the hats prior to the start of the competition.
  • Hats and their models will be assembled backstage, organized by our Stage Manager, Alicia Parendo, who will send each hat out to be judged at the proper times.
  • Hats will be modeled from the Stage Left entrance, to Center Stage, to the Stage Right Exit.  Each model will pose Center Stage, with a slow turn to show off the hats to the judges, before exiting Stage Right.  The Stage Manager and her Assistant will direct the models to and from the stage.
  • Models and their hats should arrive to the backstage entrance at Surfside Playhouse between noon and 1pm to check in and receive further instructions for the event.
  • Hats should be hand carried to the backstage entrance.
  • We will conduct a ‘walk through’ of the event on stage prior to house doors opening to the public.
  • Playhouse Doors will open at 1pm with House Doors at 1:30pm.  It will be open seating with a $5 donation at the door.
  • There will be a brief intermission while the judges deliberate.
  • All hats and their models will come to stage for the winning announcements, with prizes awarded at that time.
