Join us for the next performance of Readers’ Theater “From the Script to the Stand” presented by Surfside Playhouse.   Come hear an assortment of one act original works performed by Brevard County’s own local talent and directed/moderated by Nancy Matican-Bock. Upon completion of act two, please join us for a short talk back with the director and actors about their experience bringing new material to life.

Synopsis

Act 1

My Curiosity written by John Pesaniello, Snow Hill, MD:  This is an excerpt from a new musical inspired by the extraordinary life and work of Thomas A. Edison. In Menlo Park, New Jersey 1876: Thomas Edison, the young inventor, brings his spectacular visions to life, struggles with his roles as husband and father, and reinvents himself in the wake of family tragedy.

The Gettings Good:  written by Toby Inoue, Evanston IL: In an effort to write their own ending, an elderly couple visits the beach and discovers it’s not so simple. Added up, the little things, like daily rituals and ocean-friendly sunscreen and comfortable, familiar arguments and coupons, have the power to tie us together and anchor our lives. 

Heartless written by Dakota Silvey, NY, NY:  A desperate father comes to the office of a world-class cardiac surgeon to beg for the life of his estranged son. 

Strangers off a Train written by Samara Siskind, Ft. Lauderdale, FL.   It’s not about the destination, it’s about the people you meet along the way. 

Final Bow written by Rene Zabel, Ransen, WV:  The Final Bow follows the story of aging actress Francesca, as she prepares for her final show which stirs jealousy in younger actress Rachel, who had hoped to land the lead role. Tensions rise between the two women as they come to terms with the decision. As the play unfolds, themes of rivalry, friendship, and love intertwine to create a poignant exploration of the complexities of aging, ambition and relationships in the world of theater.

Act II

Such Dreams As Stuff Is Made Of written by By Dan McGeehan, Chicago, IL: Tucker and Poppy are in for a surprise when they return home to find it has been broken into but nothing has been stolen. Things get more confusing when the burglars return to apologize. 

I Don’t Care written by Stuart Brown, West Hartford, CT:  John Goldsmith is attempting to have his yearly physical started, but is faced with one difficulty after another.  And he hasn’t even been able to get by the receptionist.

T=2 written by William Roeder, Rockledge, FL:  a short 1-act radio play, a monologue, an essay done as a dramatic reading. What would you do if you knew the world would be destroyed? The answer depends on the lead-time. This play speculates on various responses for various lead-times. 

Aiden written by Clay Herzberg, Music, Jacob Iglitzin, Book and Lyrics, NY, NY:  Set in the not-so-distant future in New York City, AIDEN revolves around Jamie, a successful but romantically unfulfilled executive. She works tirelessly at SigmaX, a major technology company, often neglecting her personal life in pursuit of career achievements. However, her life takes an intriguing turn when she meets a man named Aiden via a dating app.
